  • 1962 – 16 June - scored 22 runs - Dudley Savill hits six boundaries, and top scored for Belsize with 41 - as they lose to     Cambridge University. (Their 63 runs represented 77% of the Belsize total!)

  •  2010 – 24 October – died.

Allum, Charlie  (see ‘The Belsize Boxing Club: the Toffs’ Institution that transformed boxing.’ pp.219,220,225,264,268)

  • 1876 - born 23rd April in Notting Hill. (Nephew of Ben Caunt).

  • He was the son of a cabman ‘champion of England’ and lived at 237 Lancaster Road.

  • 1905 - he had a genuine claim to the British middleweight (10 stone 10 pounds limit) title.

  • 1908 - the Blechynden Hall hosted a Charlie Allum benefit.

  • 1900’s instructor.

  • He fought in the Boer War at the siege of Ladysmith.

  • 1918 - killed in World War 1 on 21st July, aged 42.

Anderson, Barry

  • 1970s middleweight

 

Anderson, Ian Bruce

  • Non-boxing member.

  • Born 4 September 1905 in Southport, Lancashire.

  • Educated in St Paul's School in London.

  • Studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Thomas Meux (1924-27). 

  • Made his operatic debut at Milan's Teatro Duse in 'Madame Butterfly".  Back in England, he sang for various opera companies and in broadcasts, as well as in Noel Coward's Bitter Sweet (New York). 

  • Performed in South Africa in 1936 and  in 1937 joined the South African Broadcasting Corporation, establishing a reputation as a producer of radio opera productions and as a solo and operatic singer. 

  • On the outbreak of war, he joined the First South African Brigade.

  • He became the first South African to be awarded the OBE in recognition of his work as a war correspondent. 

  • After the war he was on the staff of the South African Embassy in Rome (1945-47), where he resumed his singing career. 

  • He become well known as an actor in a variety of theatre productions and was featured in the film of Alan Paton's 'Cry the Beloved Country'.

  • He was married to Erica Jolley.

  • Captain of the Stock Exchange football team.

  • Rowed for Thames Rowing Club.

  • Played for Middlesex Rugby Union Club.

  • 1876 - Captain of Wasps RFC - 1880 - a dashing forward, also a renowned amateur boxer and a famous boxing referee. (He was described by the periodical 'Figaro' in a February 1878 issue as 'a very `ugly customer' in a scrimmage, albeit a very presentable gentleman in a drawing-room').

  • Committee member of the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.

  • Member of the Yacht Racing Association.

  • Founder member of the ABA.

  • 1887 - ABA Treasurer -1905.

  • 1887 – Belsize BC President – 13th October

  • 1888 - ABA President.

  • 1899 - Contributor to 'Stockbrokers and sport'. Gale & Polden.

  • 1932 - died 8th April.
